Many of the older homes in downtown Savannah have a history. If you are visiting Savannah and go by one of the small book stores downtown you will find home guides and it makes it more interesting as you are looking at the old homes to use the guide to give a history.

This is the Richardsonian Romanesque style and is seen sparingly throughout Savannah. This style was mostly used for public buildings because of the cost of construction, but you'll find a few Savannah homes built in this style. There are variations of polychrome brick and stone, but stone is a primary material that characterizes the style.

As I've written about in blog posts, SCAD (savannah college of art and design) has been a huge contributor to downtown preservation, renovation and beautification. This building, The Richardsonian Romanesque that was in the previous photo, is directly across from The Gryphon Tea Room.

Another Gothic style church I caught rising in the air. They are truly eye-catching and impressive. The styles around Savannah are incredibly diverse and interesting. I spend hours just walking around, noticing the intricate details and workmanship that you don't see in new construction but can still be created.

A few years back I spent a little time in Phoenix and while I enjoyed the different environment, I started having green withdrawal thinking about the trees, flowers and shrubbery that characterize Savannah and give it such a special feel. It's truly amazing this time of the year and no matter where you go you see the green and multi-colored flowers. Even the southside development has begun including the green landscaping on newly constructed sites.

You could spend a full two days taking in the history of Savannah, Ga. All the monuments give brief history lessons and even some of the old homes in Savannah will have plaques telling the original owner, date it was built and sometimes a little history.

This is a second empire style building used for government services. When I first started identifying styles in Savannah there didn't seem to be many second empire styles, but I identify more and more the closer I look.
