Downtown Square
Savannah has many squares throughout the historic district, originally designed by James Oglethorpe. These squares slow the traffic and make walking around around town more enjoyable and relaxing. Each square represents a piece of history and is distinguished with beautiful trees, flowers, monuments, and benches to sit and read or just people-watch.

Victorian District Homes
Just south of the Downtown Historic District, between Gwinnett St and Anderson St, is the Victorian District. There are many large, stately homes throughout the Victorian District that have been renovated, are being renovated, or are in need of renovation. This area has been coming alive for the past few years as many buyers are finding the charm and the lower prices, as compared to downtown, appealing and a good option since it is only minutes from the Downtown Historic District -- a good walk if you are into walking.

The Westin Downtown Savannah
The Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa overlooks the Savannah River and is located on Hutchinson Island across the river from River Street. My wife and I spent two nights there when they first opened just to experience the views and the ferry ride. Well, I also played golf at the Sam Snead designed course behind the Westin.
It is next to the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center and is a great place to stay for conventioneers -- it is a great place to stay period. The views are excellent, especially if you can get one of the rooms with a balcony. There is a spa, four tennis courts, a heated pool, a 400-foot deepwater dock and an awesome workout room.

Ferry
The Ferry is about a 5 minute ride from River Street across the Savannah River to The Westin. Visitors can enjoy the relaxing ride for free that runs about every 30 minutes. Makes for great pictures along with easy access to and from your destination.

River Street
One of the cool things about River Street in Savannah is watching the boat and shipping activity along the Savannah River. The port is just west of River Street. From just about any of the restaurants you can watch the cargo ships, boaters, cruise ships, tugboats and ferrys going up and down the river. The huge cargo ships look unreal as they seem so close and so biger-than-life.

Talmage Memorial Bridge
The wonderful Talmage Memorial Bridge which crosses the Savannah River from Savannah, GA to South Carolina. Completed in November 1990, the new Talmadge Memorial cable-stayed bridge replaced the old Talmadge cantilever truss bridge (built in 1953), which had become a danger for large ships entering the port in Savannah, Georgia, the largest single terminal container port on the United States eastern seaboard. The new bridge provides 185 ft.(56.4 m.) of vertical navigational clearance. Its horizontal clearance is 1,023 feet with both main piers located on the north and south banks of the Savannah River. With a main span of 1100 ft. (335 m.) and a total length of 1.9 miles (3.06 km.) the new Talmadge Memorial carrier 4 lanes of traffic over the Savannah River between Georgia to South Carolina (Source: Georgia Department of Transportation).

View of the Savannah River
The Savannah River is an alluvial stream, which means its headwaters originate in the Georgia mountains and Piedmont. (The only other alluvial river on the Georgia coast is the Altamaha. The rest are essentially blackwater rivers or tidewater rivers.) The river is famous for its fossil oysterbeds located upstream. Technically, the Savannah River is a 300-mile-long river originating near Hartwell, Georgia at the confluence of the Tugaloo and Seneca rivers in the Piedmont. But the headwaters of these streams are in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The Savannah River drains a surface area of more than 10,500 square miles, of which approximately 5,800 are in Georgia, 4,500 are in South Carolina, and 175 are in North Carolina. The Savannah River has two characters: the impounded alluvial Piedmont stream north of Augusta, and the natural flowing Coastal Plain river south of Augusta. The character of the mountain stream north of Augusta is forever obliterated by many hydroelectric dams, which creates a river that's more like a lake in most stretches. Eight miles below Augusta, the river meets its final dam before being left to its own devices in the Coastal Plain of Georgia. This lower portion to Interstate 95 near the City of Savannah is deeper and calmer, and canoeists are treated to a more pristine environment, with oxbow lakes, river swamps, and bottomland forests. Savannah Cotton Exchange
Due to the economic renaissance brought on by the exportation of cotton, residents built lavish homes and churches throughout the city that reflected the wealth of the times. With the growth of trade, especially after the invention of the cotton gin on a plantation outside of Savannah, the city became a rival of Charleston as a commercial port. Many of the world's cotton prices were set on the steps of the Savannah Cotton Exchange; the building is still in existence today. (source:riverstreetsavannah.com)

Colonial Park Cemetary
Savannah's primary burial ground between 1750 and 1853 is worth a self-guided tour. Many of the city's important historical figures are buried here, including Button Gwinnett, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. You'll find the graves of prominent Savannah business minds, governors, publishers and inventors. Years of neglect and vandalism have led to the destruction of many tombstones. Hundreds of stones are missing, while the inscriptions of others are worn or have been altered. (source: citysearch.com) -

The Fountain was conceived as the focal point of the landscaped park. (source: ci.savannah.ga.us) -
Forsyth Park
One thing that makes Savannah so breath taking is the beautiful landscaping that surrounds the whole city. From old oaks filled with spanish moss, to the newer planted palm trees that line walkways, it's refreshing to be able to have the buildings and the plants co-exist instead of sacrificing one or the other. -
