Downtown Savannah Homes -- Italianate
Tuesday, February 5, 2008 at 05:53PM
This is an Italianate style home very common in the historic area, downtown Savannah. This style was popular for the 1850s well into the 1880s. Some the high style Italianate are more picturesque, following after the Gothic style, than this example which is somewhat more simply designed.
One of the identifying features are the cornic brackets. The tall, arched windows and doorway, and overhanging eaves are other features common to Italianate. The rooves on the Italianate style are low pitched or flat.
Alexander Jackson Davis was instrumental in the popularization of this style. One of my favorites (maybe because it's one of the most distinctive and easy to identify).
