Savannah Ga Real Estate Series - Wilmington Island

27 oaks_ext_rear.jpgWilmington Island is about 10 minutes from downtown Savannah going east toward Tybee Island. When I first got into real estate, Wilmington Island had very few commercial interests on the island but now there are new restaurants, food stores, retail shops, medical facilities, bars, etc.

Throughout the island there are subdivisions, from Islandwood, an older subdivision close to the business section along Johnny Mercer, to Old Towne which is newer and further back on the island -- prices range from $150,000 to well over a million for waterfront homes on the Wilmington River.

Another older section with homes that have mostly been updated and well-maintained is Wilmington Park. Many of the homes in Wilmington Park surround the Wilmington Island golf course - a semi-private course that is one of the best courses in the Savannah area (the only charity tournament I've played in which I was on the winning team was at this course).

Along Wilmington Island Road, which goes along the west end of the island, there are beautiful waterfront homes with docks along the Wilmington River. There is also a huge condo/townhome complex called Wilmington Plantation on Wilmington Island Road with some of the best water views in Savannah.

The island has both piblic and private schools for elementary and middle education, and a very good YMCA facility for working out, sports, aerobics and such. In the last ten years the island has been developed to include pretty much everything one would need -- but, like I wrote above, it's only a short distance to reach all that downtown Savannah has to offer.
